Medical coding translates medical diagnoses, procedures, medical services, and equipment into universally accepted medical alphanumeric codes. There are three types of well-known medical codes: International Classification of Diseases (ICD), Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding (HCPCS).
Medical Coding is needed because it translates standardised codes such as the Diagnosis of Patients, the List of medical necessities that the patient has received, any unusual circumstances that affected the patient’s treatment, and the list of treatment, services and supplies received by the patient into the codes.
